Stump Grinding

Grinding is the quickest, tidiest way to be rid of a stump. A purpose-built machine chews the stump — and the major surface roots — into fine chips several inches below grade, all in a single visit.

No digging out a huge root ball, no wrecked lawn. You’re left with a bed of mulch you can rake flat and backfill, so the ground is usable again and grass, beds or paving can go straight over the top.

What’s included

Everything, handled properly.

01

Below-grade grinding

The stump is ground several inches below the surface so nothing regrows and the ground is reusable.

02

Surface roots

Major protruding roots and the flare are ground out too, where access allows, for a flat finish.

03

Backfill or haul

We rake the grindings back to fill the hole, or haul them away and top with soil — your choice.

How the job runs

From first call to last sweep.

Check the site

We measure the stump, check access for the grinder, and locate any utilities nearby.

Protect & prep

Boards and screens go down to catch chips and shield fences, windows and cars.

Grind it out

The cutting wheel takes the stump and surface roots down below grade in steady passes.

Backfill & tidy

Grindings raked back or removed, the area levelled, and everything swept clean.

Straight talk on price

What it costs, and why.

Grinding is usually priced by diameter (measured across at ground level), often around $3–$5 per inch, with a small minimum. Typical single-stump jobs land here.

Stump diameter

Wider stumps take more grinding time — the main cost driver.

Root spread

Grinding surface roots or a wide flare adds a little time.

Access

A tight gate or backyard means a smaller, slower machine.

Chip haul-away

Leaving grindings as backfill is free; hauling them off is a small extra.

Small stump

$100–$250

Up to ~12" across — most ornamentals and small trees.

  • Ground below grade
  • Grindings raked back
  • Usually under an hour
Most common

Medium stump

$250–$450

~12–24" — mature shade-tree stumps.

  • Stump + surface roots
  • Backfill or haul option
  • Area levelled clean

Large / multiple

$450–$900+

Big stumps, wide flares or several in one visit.

  • Heavy-duty grinding
  • Multi-stump discount
  • Full haul & topsoil option

Ranges are typical for our area and include raking the grindings back. Ask about a discount when we grind several stumps, or combine it with a tree removal.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Still unsure about something? A real person is one call away.

What’s the difference between grinding and full removal?

Grinding chews the stump into chips below ground level — fast, tidy and cost-effective. Full extraction pulls the whole root ball out, which is far more disruptive and expensive. Grinding is right for almost every yard.

How deep do you grind?

Typically 4–8 inches below grade — deeper if you plan to replant or lay turf. Just tell us the plan and we’ll grind to suit.

What happens to the wood chips?

By default we rake them back to fill the hole (they settle over time). If you’d rather, we can haul them away and top the spot with soil for a small extra.

Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?

Best to plant a foot or two to the side, or have us remove the grindings and backfill with fresh soil first, as leftover chips tie up nitrogen as they break down.

Will grinding damage my lawn?

No — we protect the access route and the area around the stump, and clean up fully. Any small track marks recover quickly.
